ExPC Intecpc ExPC – Computing solutions for Zone Zero hazardous areas

The Intecpc ExPC is a remote computer terminal display and keyboard designed for use in the most extreme of environments such as potentially flammable and explosive atmospheres where any source of ignition must be protected against, even in fault mode. A single multi-core cable links to an interface and standard computer in the safe area - There is no requirement for a power supply to be located in the hazardous area.

A surprisingly wide range of industry sectors are potentially affected, including:

  • Adhesives
  • Agricultural
  • Automotive
  • Biotechnology
  • Chemical
  • Coatings
  • Flour mills
  • Gas
  • Manufacturing
  • Mines
  • Paint
  • Petroleum
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Sewage treatment
  • Water treatment

Such employers are required to carry out an assessment of the risks of a potentially explosive atmosphere and prepare an Explosion Protection Document. Where applicable the workplace needs to be classified and, under European safety legislation, identified by Zones and compatible ATEX products provided for use in these designated areas.

Through a combination of encapsulation and intrinsically safe design, the Intecpc ExPC can provide full PC functionality whilst achieving certification for use in the most severe European ATEX designated Ex category Zone Zero conditions where flammable atmospheres are highly likely to be present, and may be present for long periods or even continuously.

Alongside ATEX certification, North American FM and International IECEx standards have also been achieved enabling us to export worldwide.

The stainless steel cased display and custom QWERTY membrane keyboard with integral trackball mouse are located in the hazardous area, with only a single cable connection required to the interface unit in the safe area. This makes for straightforward installation and provides standard connections compatible with most PCs and peripherals, such as printers, networks etc.

The full colour display can be used with gloved hands, and is fitted with a through-glass touch-screen that is highly resistant to impact damage and resistive to most common chemicals. Ingress protection is IP 54 with options to IP 67. The ambient temperature range is 0-40 deg C.

If required in place of a standard computer in the safe area a rugged build UniPC can be specified for connection to the interface unit.
